Room by room

A practical guide to planning better lighting

Start with the way a room is used, then bring fixtures, controls, and installation details into one plan.

Map the activities in each room

List where you cook, read, work, gather, or move through the space. Notice which areas are too dim or uncomfortable. The goal is to identify real needs before choosing the number and type of fixtures.

Use different kinds of light intentionally

A room can combine general illumination with focused task lighting and selected accent lighting. Not every space needs every layer. Think about which lights you would use together and which you want to control separately.

Consider the look of the light

Light output, color appearance, and glare affect the feel of a room. If possible, compare products in a relevant setting before committing. Keep model information together so fixture and control compatibility can be reviewed.

Plan switches and controls around movement

Think about where you enter and leave the room and which lights are useful at each location. If dimming or automated controls are part of your plan, discuss them alongside the fixtures. Existing wiring can influence the available approach.

Bring installation details into the budget

Ceiling construction, access, fixture mounting, and new wiring all affect the project. Ask whether wall or ceiling repairs are included. If the work is part of a remodel, share the schedule so electrical planning happens at the appropriate stage.
